Dear Ann, we had to send our visit cards 2 days ago, you are right, but as I know nobody did it. That's why we must do it as quick as possible and send it to our teacher first, or if yo can, to the organizers of the contest. (I suppose the first variant is easier for you). As for the pictures-find the icon on the top of the letter (your letter, when you are trying to write it). So, it is the 17th icon from the left ( a man), press this icon and find your picture. Don't forget to compress the picture. Otherwise it will be too big. P.S. There is another variant send your pictures to me or my mom and we'll expose them Ilya

Отправлено: 11.04.11 13:36. Заголовок: Has anybody written ..
Has anybody written a "Translator's code"? Here's my one: The main translator’s rules: 1) The translator always should realize made on him/her responsible. The success of translation depends on that, how many knowledge and Sincere& forces the translator has enclosed in it. 2) Besides scientific, first of all linguistic preparation, the translator should be able to overcome blanks in the knowledge by means of erudition. Plus, sense of humour (of course, if it necessary). :))) 3) Depending on a kind of activity of translators it is possible to divide all translators on oral and written. With the first group everything is clean, they have to translate everything right here and right now, and the second divides on translators technical and fiction literature. Different kinds of translation demand various abilities and temperament. The oral translator should as much as possible full to hand over the information here and now. As a rule, they haven’t time to look for something in dictionaries. 4) Learn to translate obscene expressions, idioms, phraseological units. It is difficult to translate an impromptu "Kuzkina’s mother", But sometimes it is possible to tell: "The lecturer has joked", using an absolutely not translated word-play, "And I think, it will be pleasant, if all of you will laugh now". :)) The necessary effect, for certain, will be reached. 5) Get a writing-book where you will write down epithets, synonyms, set phrases for standard situations 6) The translator should fill up the lexicon vocabulary every day. __________________________________ But the translator should understand, what to know everything - is impossible. And to know all - is unnecessary at all. :)

Dear Nikita Skorohvatov! Thank you for your "Code" as you are the first who managed to do it. Well, I really like your code and would like to know: 1) What kind of translator would you like to be? 2) How do you think, if there are some things that any translator must not do in any case?

I expect to find it very interesting and fascinating because I like a lot contests which are held by Eidos. Now, I don’t have any questions, but I think I’ll have during contest. And "Translator's code": Code must allocate the basis of action to be followed by a translator that would fully convey the meaning of words spoken or written text. Basically, the Code should address the oral part of the interpreter. For example, everyone knows that one word in different languages can have much more translations. Each translation may have different meanings. Thus, the interpreter should be careful when translating speech to avoid conflict situations. The translator should be easy to get in touch with any people, to find a common language to talk was not constrained. The translator must not have bad habits, so as not to nauseate a buddy. I've read your writings and realized that my ones are very simple and small...

Could you name those bad habits that a translator should avoid? 2. How do you think, if there are some things that any translator must not do in any case? 3. Do you have your own recipe how to become a good translator?

Hello, everybody! We also want to present our Code. We think that 1. A good translator must be literate. He must constantly improve his literacy and broaden his horizons. 2. A good translator must have a good style and sense of style in ordsr that, for any translation, whether written or oral, the text was read or sounded clear, understandable and beautiful. 3. A good translator must respect the author's text and its translation. He must not try to change it, and certainly not add or not reduce it on his discretion. 4. The good translator should own the big base of dictionaries, encyclopedias, to use the Internet in the educational purposes. At the slightest doubt in correctness of a writing of words it should check itself by means of the dictionary. 5. The good translator has no right to pass an opinion the point of view of the said text at an oral translation and the more so it shouldn't present the information at own discretion and to belief. 6. A good translator should be responsible for the translation and its quality. The translator should recognize and rectify the errors, and the good translator shouldn't suppose them. 7. A good translator always understands that the information which he has received for translation, is confidential. He shouldn't use it in the mercenary purposes and do it the property of the public. 8. A good translator will never take huge volume of the text which needs to be made in the shortest terms if he knows that won't consult. It is better to refuse transfer or to take half of order, than to hand over the transfer made on "tjap-mistake". The good translator doesn't suppose hack-work. 9. And the main thing: the good translator loves the work and does it with love. Be good translators! The translator should possess knowledge of the country, culture, customs of this country, traditions etc. (i.e. it should to be competent of almost any area) Diplomatic qualities are important too Insight Good memory Protection of interests of the client. Presence of rules helps to be guided with difficult situations, reduces risk of possible speech errors and risk to be not understood. The good translator should possess such professional qualities, as responsibility, diligence and respect for people. Also it should have skills of the journalist, the secretary, the writer. The translator should be polite with its clients. It should be very attentive (to hear to ALL from this that the client speaks, to translate the information given to it authentically). Also it should think quickly (that is to translate very quickly). The translator is obliged to provide high level of competence of spheres of a source language, a target language, the technician of transfer and text subjects. It should do it by the all ways known to it. The translator should be able to convey all meaning told by its client, to be able to transfer emotions else. Besides it sometimes should be able to convince the interlocutor that its client of the rights. Presently force will not help your business. If you, the translator, don't know has imparted belief of people you shouldn't work in this trade. And, certainly, the main restriction which can be in work of the translator is increases of a voice on the client and the more so translator mustn’t break its personal rights.

Dear girls! Thank you for your Code. Would you, please, answer some of my questions? 1. Some of the participants of our contest think that a sense of humour is a very important trait of character for a translator. What do you think about it? 2. Are there any things that a translator has no right to do in any situation? 3. How can a person become a very good translator?

Hello, Olga Hikolaevna!) We were thinking-thinking… And… these are answers!) 1. The sense of humour is necessary for the translator because in an operating time there can be every possible unexpected situations, and sometimes they even can be the comical. And in such situation the translator from sense of humour will always find such way out which wouldn't humiliate the client (especially if the client has made wrong action) 2. The answers are in our Code. (Such as: “A good translator will never take huge volume of the text which needs to be made in the shortest terms if he knows that won't consult”. and “Certainly, the main restriction which can be in work of the translator is increases of a voice on the client and the more so translator mustn’t break its personal rights”.) 3. He just should carry out Code rules)) And, of course, first of all his language skills should be perfect! With love, your “the BEST girls”))

To fulfill the task I must say that there is a translator and interpreter. They both work with languages but their works is different. I will speak about an interpreter. She/ he must be: 1. Smart. He/she has to know a lot to translate details correctly. 2. Good-looking. He/she works with foreigners and represents his own country. 3. Sociable and tolerant. He/she has to deal with people of different cultures and peculiarities. 4. Well-mannered and gentle. He/she has to communicate with emotional people who can easily lose control. 5. Fluent in the foreign languages. He/she should know idioms and phrasal verbs not to get at a loss 6. Self-confident. He/she must be responsible for the truthfulness and correctness of his translations. 7. He/she must know the culture of a foreign country as well as his own one, because he/she should love and respect the natives. To sum it up I can say that to be an interpreter is not as easy thing though it’s really exciting, because it’s gives a lot of opportunities that is why this job appeals to many young people. I’m not exception=)

Are you going to learn any other languages? I also think that an interpreter should be very patient and have strong nerves. And make sure that he doesn't provoke conflicts with his translation.

Here we are! The name of our team is Only Two We have been acting as a team for two years, but earlier our team was bigger! We can't say that we are the cleverest, but more obstinate and proof. We are very different and it makes our work together easier, because you know “Truth is born in discussion” or.quarells…sometimes Sveta is good at translation, especially at poetical one. So I hope that all difficult translation will be done by Svetlana (Ilua) And I hope that Ilya will communicate with the other participants and make all technical part of the work.(Svetlana) Some part of the work must be done together and we are not ready yet with the code, because we have different points of view, so we must come to agreement first. We are late for the contest cause we hoped to gather all the team (There were 8 of us last time) But we have rather difficult time now-we are preparing for exams. Oh, we’ve forgotten to say that Ilya is 16 and he is in the 9th form, and Sveta is 16 and in the 10th form. Ilya is interested in psychology and Sveta in medicine. As you can see we have something in common We don’t hope to win this time, but have good time and interesting tasks!!! Klopova Svetlana and Belikin Ilya

My vizit card My name is Anna Zadorozhnaya. I'm 17years old. I live in Kaluga and study In Gimnasia № 9 in 10"V" (medical) form I'm very curious and creative, I like to speak foreign languages (now I know only English and not so well, that’s why I am here ) But I continue studying it and enjoy it very much) Else I have a lot of interests:(I like to do something unusual like studying Japanese language, I like how it sounds; and fighting arts- it's very interesting for me because I studied it . I can draw (often landscapes and anime heroes),sing, play the violin and the piano (I finished music and art school).I like listen to music(rock; j-rock(Japan) and something else...also I like to read (in English too),to walk with friends, to play pin pong, and to do other interesting things... Now I'm a member of anime-club +Karas+ (we organize a lot of festivals for anime-fans in Kaluga; this winter our club was on Moscow festival "Animatrix") P.S. Well, now you know what to talk with me about :))) http://pics.qip.ru/301owso.jpg<\/u><\/a> I like travelling, as you can see) ____________ The translator’s code: The most important characteristics for the translator are: *Good memory and good knowledge of language (The translator should always improve it) *really GOOD translator must be literate, creative and should to do his work well and with love (a real translator is who really likes his work). The translator should know specificity of his job well: *The translator should know well culture of that country in which language he talks. *The translator should precisely know, what kind of translation he is going to do (written or an oral translation) (because it’s so different things!)And understand the original-text well. *The translator should be attentive, in other way he can make a mistake (That’s why translator need in good vocabularies and Internet). *The translator must be honest. *The translator should be able to transfer emotions in his translation. *And I think the translator should speak fluently, accurately and clearly for associates (otherwise it is not the translator whom nobody will understand) *The translator should be diplomatic and should avoid sharp expressions and excessive estimated judgments (in the text). The translator mustn’t: 1 deform the author's text and to change sense of author's phrases. 2 have such bad habits as laziness and roughness. 3 do his work badly. And I think that the translator should be just a good person with whom it is always pleasantly to talk). P.S. I wanted to make this text on a beautiful background, but I couldn't send it here(

Hi, slader! We have chosen your translation for analysis. We think that you have done a good translation. Translation of the poem completely corresponds to the original. Style corresponds to style of transfer. We liked the translation of this poem, it was pleasant to us, but translation is too literal. We would like to advise the author of the translation to make it more creative. It is an artwork and we were offered to translate it in different ways. So we expected the translation to be more creative.

Well, I decided to put the answers here Here's my visit card Hello!! I am Tishina Margarita Andreyevna. I go to Gymnasium #1 in my tiny Sterlitamak. I’ve been studying English since I was 8 years old. It is my hobby, my favourite subject and…I hope my future. I enjoy taking part in various English contests and olympiads (and I’m usually successful). I love to read English books and watch films in English. Last year my teacher and I made a research work on Russian and American jokes. It turned out that jokes are very difficult to translate, sometimes it is just impossible! This contest is a great opportunity to try some other forms of translation. As I have already said, I would like my future job to be connected with English and other foreign languages. Perhaps, I will become a translator. So, why not to start translating right now? I hope to find out something new about translation and learn to use this knowledge. I’m never satisfied with the result of my work, but I’m sure this contest is worth taking part in. Dear participants, I would like to ask you some questions. 1) Which profession would you choose: translator or interpreter? Your answers are important for me. 2) It’s rather difficult to translate the 2nd stanza of the poem in the 3rd task, isn’t it? Is it possible to change some of the expressions with ones common in the English language?

Отправлено: 17.04.11 17:54. Заголовок: Let me represent you..
Let me represent you my "Translator's code" Ta-daaaaa!!!!!! I am in the 9th form and I am not a professional translator, of course. Although I have to translate something at every English lesson, I am still not aware of many hardships one faces working as a translator. That is why having a special list of rules would be very useful for me. As a beginner, I need to know what I can do and what I can’t, what is possible and what is not. I think that “Translator’s Code” should help translators to solve general problems connected with their job. For example, when I was working on the 3rd task I had to answer some questions: “Can I change the meaning of the original text? Can I omit some of the ideas because I can’t translate them?” and so on. Here is my own version of the “Translator’s Code”. 1) Try to translate the text as close as you can (if it is possible in this situation). 2) Take your time and think about different translations, then choose the best one. 3) Use the appropriate style (It is not a very good idea to translate Shakespeare’s sonnets using slang). 4) Always check your works for mistakes (I don’t think I managed to do it properly. I am sorry). 5) Be polite in your works and take the mentality and customs of different nations into account. 6) Respect the work of other translators and NEVER copy their translations. 7) Do not spoil the original text. a) Never change the meaning of the text. You can use different words but do not forget about the main idea. b) Never cut down the text and never add your own ideas. 8) Do not use computer translators. They cannot see the main idea and help you. They will only make your job more difficult. You must respect the author of the original text and do the translation yourself. 9) Remember that quality is more important than quantity. You had better make one excellent translation than ten poor translations. 10) This is not a rule but a recommendation. Try to choose the topic you are interested in. It is really hard to make a good translation of the text if you find it boring. These are ten main rules a translator should follow. And what are the features of a good translator? Trying to do his best (Important in any job) Ready to imagine (Good imagination can help you to find the right words) Assiduous (Extremely important. You may have to spend hours with dictionaries) Not afraid of difficulties (They are guaranteed) Sense of humour Loving his job (If you love to translate, you are almost a good translator) Able to see the author’s point of view Translating impartially (Even if you don’t agree with the author) Obeying the rules of translating Reading a lot of books (The more you read, the more words you learn) So, this is my “Translator’s Code”. The rules are very simple but still they are necessary for me. Finally, I would like to say, that it is impossible to translate a text not changing anything. In my opinion, it is really hard to make the reader feel as if he was reading the original. That is why working as a translator requires responsibility.

Hi, dear participants! Hello, Olga Nikolaevna! Here are our translations of the poem. Variant 1. If you want to know our opinion, we should say, that it is necessary to use the dictionary to make exact and full transfer of any text. There are many words which will help you with your work contain in the dictionary. But on the other hand the big variety of words can make you are confused. Some words or word combinations containing in the dictionary, have the coloring which will help the translator to transfer emotional coloring of the translated text. All dictionaries were made throughout all history of written speech. Each word has own history and is connected with any certain event. The work of many linguists is reflected in dictionaries and sometimes it's difficult to choose a correct variant of a word or a word combination to convey meaning of the translated text in full conformity with the original both in lexical and in emotional value. There is no doubt that the dictionary plays large role in the work of the translator. It is the main assistant to the translator after his own knowledge. Variant 2 Is it difficult to you to speak with your foreign friend? The decision is here! The dictionary! It will help you to cope with this problem. It becomes easy To you to speak, and each word will be clear. Besides the dictionary can tell to you a lot about a planet, actors, animal, and (the most important thing) about life. The dictionary in hands of the person is as a magic wand! You can operate conversation: it is enough to find only the necessary page, and all becomes clear at once! The dictionary – the decision of all your problems!

Dear Girls, I think your translations are very good! They are not very accurate, but it's interesting to read this poem in different styles=) What styles did you choose? I suppose, that the first is an essay and the second is an advert. Am I right?

Hi, daisy-ritka! Thanks for your kind words! Yes, you are right: the first is an essay and the second is an advert. And you say that our translations are not very accurate, but we think that it is an artwork and we were offered to translate it in different ways. So we wanted the translation to be more creative. Are we right?

Of course, it's an artwork and you managed to create very interesting translations) Still, I think that the first translation is closer to the text. I liked the advert very much, but I couldn't recognize the poem in it.However, I agree that when you translate the poem in a different style it's impossible not to lose some ideas or words. I had a try to translate this poem as an encyclopedia article, and, frankly speaking, you were more successful in translating the poem in a different style than me. Well, it's just my opinion

Well, dear friends! It's rather strange for me to remind you about it... but where are your works? I mean that not everybody managed to make the "Code" and the translation of a poem. And our contest is about finishing... Waiting for your works and discussions on the forum!

Dear Olga Nikolaevna, Participating in this contest was so exiting for me!! I like interesting and difficult tasks Here're my translations 1 вариант I look into the dictionary more eager every day, Its columns twinkle with the sparks of feeling. Time and again the vaults of words the art will be revealing Holding a secret lamp to light its way. All of the words are stamped by an event, They were so hard for humankind to gain I’m reading: “Time and age”. Then: “Till the end Of time. Live through the ages”. And again: “Live for all time. And waste your time”. It sounds Like conscience, and reproach, and ire. No! That’s not the dictionary I’m holding in my hands, But pieces of an ancient story broken long ago. 2 вариант (Энциклопедическая статья) The poem “Dictionary” by S.Y.Marshak Every day I am becoming more diligent in working with the dictionary. I can see the sparkles of feeling twinkling in its columns. The art will repeatedly cast light on different meanings of words with its so-called “secret lamp”. All of the words appeared because of some events. Man didn’t get them without trouble. It is said: “Time and age. Till the end of time. Live through the ages. Live for all time. Waste your time, etc.” These words express reproach, anger and conscience. The book that is lying in front of me is not a dictionary. It is an ancient story divided into small parts, which were scattered all over the world.

daisy-ritka Hi) Competition was pleasant to me (I already thought that absolutely has forgotten English language - but I still remember something) though I usually don't like to compete =) In a poem it was difficult with a rhyme. It was necessary in a dictionary (in Russian in this time I would write 50 poems of such length), besides I very much don't love to deform the author's text but sometimes it need to do in poems Thanks that so has highly appreciated my translation (I think that my translation is not so good )

Dear Olga Nikolayevna! Dear Cookie! We realise that we are too late with our code and translation, but we have serious reasons for it. So, pour Code: The code of translator….What is it? It’s interesting to know if it exists as an official document. Of course it does exist…but where? We’d like to read it…before writing our code:) Well, let’s try to create our code as we understand it. First of all a good translator should have a good education and perfect knowledge of the foreign language! Then he/she must have a wide lexical store, otherwise he/she is not a translator. So, the main characteristics of a good translator (here we must notice that we are going to speak about translator of a written materials, whether it is a scientific test or a strict document) As we think this kind of translators don’t need such qualities as a pleasant appearance, sociability and ….though it won't be superfluous in any trade. • Translator should have a good sense of style in order to transfer a style of the author • Translator should have a good sense of humor (without sarcasm, of course)in order to understand where the joke is and where to be serious • Translator should understand humor of the peoples and countries he is going to work with. Everybody knows how difficult for us to understand specific English humor, and more difficult to make it understandable for us. ( in translation we mean) • Translator should be widely-read and competent in different areas, such as politic, economic, jurisprudence and etc • Translator should become an excellent improvisator; no pauses in your translation, no interruption etc • Translator must create elegant thought on base of meaningless jumble of words • Translator mustn’t be a dusty soulless dictionary • Translator should remember that he/she make translation for person, who will listen it: the author of words know his thoughts very well without your help • Translator should believe in him/herself: you are here, because another persons didn’t study any foreign language • Never show this code to the broad masses

Hello people!)) We want to tell you about our participating: We have decided to participate in the All-Russia remote competition of projects "Duel of Translators" to test the forces, to learn, how much well we know English language. And it has appeared knowingly. Our main results are that we have more deeply studied English language, have learned to express accurately our thoughts and feelings in a foreign language. The greatest interest in us was caused by the task in which we should create «the code of translators». In the given task we have expressed all our opinions, thoughts and wishes concerning qualities which we would like to see in the modern translator and in his work. The basic difficulties at us have been connected with estimation of creative works of other participants. After all to estimate another's work it is necessary to the participant will understand, in what his successes and what errors he has. It was necessary to pick up such words not to offend the participant, whose work we estimated, but also precisely to specify his "pluses" and "minuses". In the future we hope that we will participate in similar competitions more often. After all similar actions develop us, forcing us to notice our weaknesses. And we wish you all to have success in all your contests, in your life!)) With big love, your "the BEST girls"!)) =*

Essay (late a little, I couldn't send it) What‘s a dictionary? When you look for something in a dictionary you (always) can ask yourself when and why these words can appear and who can think up them. You can think "what meanings and what emotions could cause these words in other time?" Every word in a dictionary has its own history sad or happy funny or serious … that means every word consists of their story and feelings what this word can cause. The art need in these words and it "look for" the (same) words which can express different emotions. Every word has the trails in history in people memory. Words are based on events which have happened in the past. To think up the word is not so easy, it appear not so easy. The same words could have the different meanings. The author compares a dictionary with an ancient story. When I look in the dictionary and see many similar words that I start to understand what connection between these words (maybe they can have an identical origin ... or have arisen at the same time) It can appear more interesting than it seems in the beginning) Sometimes it is useful to know what means this or that word (there are people which use a word and don't know what this word means) I think that a dictionary it’s an important thing for each people, because from a vocabulary we can receive exact, more trustworthy information about a word, than from other sources. P.S. I think that it has a lot of mistakes(

From time to time I spend a day or night In searching words in all the books I find. Their second meaning Like fading light By only magic spark Can be defined. The word reflect the life They ever saw: The wars and battles, happiness and sorrows. We can pronounce “flight” And witness awe. We can pronounce “grief” And witness horror. The one who reads the words Can be unique, The one who understands them- Even better. Their complex meaning Helps us to reveal All hidden secrets stored By means of letters.

Dear Olga Nickolaevna! I liked to participate in competition "Duel of translators". I took in this competition part not for to win but for the sake of the process of participation. Because pleasure of that for me has turned out to carry out all tasks at my poor knowledge of language this achievement for me. It costs all spent efforts and time) I have understood that even if the task seems very difficult at first, it doesn't mean that it is not necessary even to try to make it; on the contrary it is necessary to try to make everything that can. I have a little improved knowledge of language (though I am dissatisfied with results of the work, always it would be desirable to make better), I have learned to express the thoughts more particularly and short in English. Tasks № "2 and № 3 were especially interesting they have helped to open potential of the translator and to express the point of view on these points in question. During work performance there were the most different feelings: sometimes I was at a deadlock and felt feeling of a hopelessness which was replaced by enthusiasm when it was possible to me to solve a problem (especially it concerns a poetic translation). But most of all arose feelings of discontent with myself. The task №3 became the most difficult for me as has already been told at a forum it is required to know well language to pick up a rhyme in a poetic translation, also there were problems in due course (I not so quickly can do tasks, besides I constantly improve it) it was necessary to do in parallel a lot of work, but to me all was possible to make all tasks practically in time. On the future it would be desirable to make essential progress in studying and understanding of language, it would be desirable to take part in other competitions and center "Eidos" Olympiads as well in other subjects. It would be desirable to participate in this competition next year, whether but I will be in 11 form and I don't know will can I do it. I would to tell 'thanks' to organizers of competition and all participants, and to wish new achievements in work and studying.

All kind of task was very interesting. Sometimes the task seems very difficult but later I try to make it. I have learned to express the thoughts more particularly and short .the contest «Duel of translators" teaches me to think and speak in English correctly The task №2 I think was the best. It very interesting to know what interpreter must to do. During work performance there were the most different feelings: sometimes I was at a deadlock and I didn't understand what I must to do but them I intend and go to do the task. The task №3 became the most difficult for me because I'm not a poet. I want to say “thanks” to organizers of this contest it was wonderful! Thank all of you my dear friends! Good lack!
