My favourite story about Sherlock Holmes is "Five orange pips". It's amazing, as Holmes uses the deductive method.
He found the murderer without leaving home!I always amazed Holm's logic and wit.And I think, that in this story he showd as his best abilities.

My questions for pertners:
Dear Yana, you write, that you can't imagine life without mysteries.
What mysteries have been in your life?
Dear Ivan
You write "Readers like to solve a crime described in a detective, in the same way as they like to solve a crossword puzzle"
Have you ever find a clue of a story before you read it before the end?
Dear Natasha, you write, that the most fascinating story about Sherlock Holmes is your story. What about it?

Dear Dan,

Stories in which we see ALL chain of reasoning of the great detective, ALL logic chain of its thought — it is not enough.
Is more often we observe one-two link of this chain — and a final conclusion;
but how Holmes to such conclusion has come, not always clearly...

Hellow, dear participants! First of all I have looked at your photos and through your visit cards. You seem to be very open-hearted and friendly persons. Dear Yana Kozlova, in the photo you are in the arm chair of Sherlock Holmes! Have you really been to the Museum of Sherlock Holmes in London? As for the first poem experience by Natalya Vlasova, it shows how deep your love for Canon Doyle is. Keep it up!

5. We want to draw attention to our hidden talents in writing short stories. We want to demonstrate our friends all over the country our great desire to become “the little Doyles” and masters of deduction.

6. Looking forward to being displayed in the Baker Street Museum and like Conan Doyle being knighted for our literary service in the project. To be serious, we hope to become more creative and better educated while participating in the contest. We enjoy extensive privileges to dig deeper in Conan Doyle’s literary inheritance. And under the gaze of the whole detective world one member of our team N. Vlasova tries to conquer your hearts, dear friends, by her first poem experience.

Dear participants!

I feel proud that the contesters, who are taking part in the discussions, reveal so much knowledge and are so energetic in showing their attitude towards our subject. Let me express my attitude to your sayings in the form of a short poem. The answer to the question from the poem is not compulsorily, however I would be pleased if you share your secrets with all of us.

Oh, Mr. Holmes, the master of detectives
You are the wisest man, I’ve ever known.
If you could only read the poem by Natasha,
You’d estimate its style, deep thoughts and tone.
My friends, one question from Nat’s poem asks all clearly
“What can you overcome to reach the top?”
Please answer it, in short and indicating merely.
Main qualities of yours, which make you never stop.

Dear Andrey, I would not say that it is a success. However, I like rhyming words and make short poems. The more words you know, the easier they can be rhymed. And also, you should feel some rhythm of how the words sound. Just try.

1. Some people think that the main detective's idea is to find a murderer (thief, offender and etc) but don't explain the reasons of his crime. And it means that detective stories aren't profound literature.
As for me, I totally disagree! Reading of detectives inspires me to solve mysteries. It's always pleasantly to find something new and use it in your life. These books develop the ability to think clearly and help to lay out everything in my head.

2. In detective there are no place for love. But in our life we can feel and see love every day.
I think, everyone knows detectives where we can see love. For example, Love is present in new film about Sherlock Holmes. He is in love with Irene Adler.

3. There are many characters in Conan Doyle's stories. But the main characters are Sherlock and Watson. But it does not spoil the whole meaning. Plot captures us and draws in the world of mysterious cases and investigations.

4. I think, everybody faced with the mysterious stories in his life. The puzzles are the part of our life. Every time I meet with a secret, I remember detective stories, which i had read before. And they help me to solve a problem.

Hello, dear participants of the project!!!

I offer the arguments in favour of reading of detectives:

1. Readers like to solve a crime described in a detective, in the same way as they like to solve a crossword puzzle.

2. Readers like feeling of confidence of a reality of the events occurring in the detective novel.

3. Readers like to test satisfaction at the sight of the villain who has met with the deserts.

4. People read detectives once again to affirm as the belief in efficiency of laws.

Dear Natalia Ivanovna. Yes, it's an armchair of Sherlock Holmes. I've been in this museum. And I really liked it. There were a lot of wax figures which represented some plots from the books about Sherlock Holmes. It was really interesting. And I bought there collector's edition of books called "The hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Valley of Fear".

Our arguments FOR the detective fiction
Our dear opponents,
You are wrong when you say the detective story belongs to low literature. Don’t you consider William Shakespear’s “Hamlet” a literary work? But it can also be called a detective story too! Certainly it is a question of taste and culture which literature to read. We think and you will agree with us that detective fiction has gained tremendously wide audience. Why? What do you think?
Firstly, we think the readers get a chance to be involved mentally in solving the mysteries. These books develop an ability to think clearly and they exercise our mind (N. Vlasova). Secondly, the detective fiction becomes a refuge in our hectic real world, it can help the readers to escape from everyday life and problems (O. Panasko). Finally, readers like to see bad people punished. The guilty person is discovered and the good always wins upon the evil (Y. Shubina). Besides, exciting and ingenious plot has been attracting a lot of readers for many years. So a “profound” literature is the literature which has profound influence on people (N. Vlasova). And the detective fiction has proved it. We think that the originality of the detective story is not in the fact that the guilty person is punished, but in the way the writer arranges the events, and builds the narrative structure and the contents (Y. Kozlova).
It is a wrong way of thinking to consider detective stories to be empty of love. For example, Love is present in new film about Sherlock Holmes. He is in love with Irene Adler (N. Vlasova). The base of most detective stories is naturally born passion. Passion can be different: jealousy, greed, envy etc. But the strongest passion is always love. The reason of many crimes, especially committed by women, is the miserable love that easily transforms any ordinary story to an entertaining and enjoyable detective romance (K. Tsaryova). Any love line immediately holds the readers’ attention and keeps them guessing who has committed the crime (A. Gravanov).
Yes, we agree that the most important and the valuable moment in any literature is a person and his thoughts, needs and his way of life. But we must admit that detective fiction shows not only the characters involved in sensational crimes, but the period of time they were committed, the spirit of the whole epoch (K. Tsaryova). And it is as valuable as wide description of different types of characters in novels. Today’s reader is living in an advanced scientific and technological world. This fact can influence the author’s choice in choosing the number of characters for his story, it is restricted. This is the reality of life and we should admit it. We think this genre will continue to grow and gain appreciation from the literary world (O. Rakovetskaya).
We think it is useful to read detectives especially for young people. This genre develops their mind. It is like the battle of wits between the reader and the detective (A. Tausneva). Besides, young people are fond of adventures. So reading a detective story becomes an adventure in itself. People like to reread the detectives once again to confirm their belief in efficiency of laws (V. Emel’yanov). We are sure the detective fiction is a hymn to human logic in the face of the strange mystery.

Dear Ekaterina,

I agree with you, because when I read the book, I walked on streets of London.
Mentally, I always was there, in England.
The book amazes with that atmosphere which was created by the author.
I inhaled that fog which was condensed in a city.

Through Watson Konan Doyle it acquaints us Sherlock Holmes and its investigations,
and for Sherlock Holmes he is the friend and the reliable assistant.

Dear Natalia Ivanovna,
The first book I have read was a detective. Yes, it was a real detective story about little boys and girls. The solved serious problems. They conducted an investigation and found a way out of situations.
And nothing has changed at the moment.
I also like detective stories. And as for me, the most fascinating story about Sherlock Holmes is my story. But I am reading The Hound of the Baskervilles with pleasure.

Dear Andrey! Thank you for your question. If in short, for me, a detective is a mystery, investigation and a caught criminal. To put it in a more detail, reading a good detective is first of all a pleasure to feel a good language, to be absorbed by the music of a high quality literature. Secondly, for me it’s of essential to be absolutely sure, that through a complicated plot there will be a bright and unpredictable denouement and Themis, a goddess of justice, will be celebrating her victory. Well, If the detective does not disappoint me, a good spirit through all day long will be guaranteed!

There is a very good writer in Russia - Boris Akunin. His detective stories about Erast Fandorin are fascinating and so good that you can't stop reading them! He is one of my favorite writers.

I think modern style of writing a detective story hasn't quite changed, but still there are some changes.
For example, Holmes' method of investigating a crime is quite different from the methods of modern detectives.

One rainy morning Mr. Sherlock Holmes is visited at his house, Baker Street, 221-b, by shocked Constable of Her Majesty the Queen. His news is incredible: the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen have been stolen. Bearskins – their pride and privilege! In three days, an outstanding historic procession is to take place – the Queen’s equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation. If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation! The best detectives are involved. But the only hope is Sherlock Holmes. How will the crime of century be solved? The great detective starts building a logic chain: if he could understand what for the cunning and ingenious thief needed to take the Guardsmen’s famous attributes, he could manage to be on the track of the criminal.
Next day Holmes comes to the crime scene – cloakroom of the Guardsmen. Everything seemed generally, except open cupboards. After many hours of studying sites commencing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go home. Three days later:
-Watson, I know, who is a robber.
-Really? It was such an easy case?
-No! It was very difficult! But I was not in vain called the best detectives in the world. Look at this. What is it?
-It’s piece of red cloth.
-Yes. I found it on door of one of the cupboards. Robber caught his clothes on the cupboard when robed bearskins. Note, that it is made of the same material as the shape of the Guards.
- Holmes, you are so observant! I would never bother over such a trifle.
- In the case of detectives little things play a very important role.
-I’ll remember that.
-Ok. Let us not be distracted by extraneous conversations Than, there was blood on the floor. Maybe offender wounded when ran away. Hand of one of the guards was rewound. And finally the last piece of evidence – hair with a bearskin. I took it when we was on the crime scene. It was on there guardsman, who had a bandage hand.
-I understand you, dear Holmes. Robber- it is a wounded guardsman. But why?
-I know, that you ask me that question. His name is John Roadrunner. He was a contender for the post of captain of the Queen Guard, but it was another John was very angry about it and about this man and wanted revenge. And than he thought, if he will steal headdresses of guardsmen equipage will be disrupted and man, who “stole” the John’s post will be dismissed.
-And he almost got it! If not you his plan would succeed.
-Okay! Lat us go to the Queen and tell her everything
That was solved the case about bearskins’ steel.

Case about Bearskins.

One grey morning Mr. Sherlock Holmes was visited at his house, Baker street, 221-b, by the excited Constable of Her Majesty the Queen.
- Oh, Mr. Holmes! – Constable started talking, hardly hiding impatience.
- We have something absolutely awful…
His news was incredible: the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen had been stolen. Bearskins – their pride and privilege!
- In three days, - said Constable,- an outstanding historic procession is to take place – the Queens’ equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation. If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation!
- I beg you, Mr. Holmes, go with me as soon as possible! – he added.

***
When Sherlock Holmes came to the place of crime, he looked around him at everything in the room and at last his eyes came back to the bright, smiling face of the guardsman Ben Taylor by name, who was the first to find out the loss.
I hoped that Holmes would share his thoughts with me, but he was silent. We were walking in silence, we reached our apartment on Baker street 221-b, keeping silence and in the same silence we had dinner. I bit my lip to stop myself asking him questions when we went to bed.
When in the morning I went downstairs to have breakfast, Holmes was already sitting at the table. He welcomed me and drew my attention to an announcement in a morning newspaper:

«Welcome to the theatre "Coliseum" to see the show

"Know the Grizzly Bear”.
On tonight’s show we give a perfect prize
to the person disguised in a Grizzly Bear.”

Watson: Are you going to start the investigation?
Holmes: Immediately. We must find some clues so we can catch these thieves. Look!
Watson: What is it? The ticket to the show?
Holmes: Yes, I found it when I was examining the room! (He looked at the ticket with a magnifying glass)
Watson: Let's go to the theatre.
Holmes: Hurry up, if you wish to play the game to the end!

***
We often went to the theatre with Holmes. We entered the building where we were met by the director of London theatre "Coliseum" Mr. Devis.
We passed to the corridor where there were make-up rooms for the staff of the theatre. Holmes asked, which room belonged to Ms. Uorder, and Mr. Devis pointed to the necessary door.
- Ms. Uorder is a remarkable actress, and she has been working at this theatre four years, - Mr. Devis said.
We stopped, and Holmes knocked loudly at the door.
- My name is Sherlock Holmes, - he said, - and this is Mr. Watson. I believe there is no need to represent Mr. Devis to you. We have come to help you, Ms. to finish your tricky story.

***
- Yesterday, much seemed to me strange but when I‘ve read the newspaper this morning, all things have been put into the logical order, - Sherlock Holmes explained.
- I was filled with the feeling that it was not an usual crime. It was obvious they wanted to demonstrate something, under the gaze of the media, I would tell, I t was a brave action but too theatrical.
And when I found the ticket to the show on the floor, I realized who helped to Ben Taylor.
Ben Taylor smiled at me yesterday but the fear went out of his eyes. It seemed to me suspicious. He tried to conceal something.
The motive of the crime is simple – Ms. Uorder and her groom Ben Taylor the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen are not rich. They do not have money for their wedding and the honeymoon. Ms. Uorder learns that at the theatre during the show it is possible to win the big prize. So she decides to steal headdresses and to make a costume of a Grizzly Bear out of them. They really believed their trick to be successful.
- There is no doubt, Ms, your groom is incredibly devoted to you.
- Yes, he loves me, and I love him.
All of us kept silent. Suddenly it was interrupted with silent sobbing of the actress.
- Forgive me! – Ms. Uorder whispered, wiping tears.
- Only now I understand, how absolutely foolish our action is!
- Yes, it was from your heart and not the head, - Sherlock Holmes smiled.

***
When we left the theatre, Constable of Her Majesty the Queen met us at the exit. He looked pale.
Be happy together and live a full life!-said Sherlock. A victorious smile returned to Ben Taylor’s face. - I am for ever indebted to you!-he exclaimed.
The next day a landmark occasion – the Queens’ equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation took place in London and the newspapers wrote it was the most spectacular event the Londoners had seen
.

«It is a very sad thing that nowadays there is so little useless information»
– Oscar Wilde

The harness of the horse has flashed outside the window. Merchants lure people and sell their goods. The neighboring children dart through the crowd. The men march slowly with hats on their heads, leaning on their canes. Local women look out of the windows and hang clothes. The sun blinds the passersby by its brightness. The day surprises everyone with its ease. The whole Baker Street is literally bursting with life. Both the winter and the spring used to be cold, and people have immediately thawed with the arrival of heat. Everybody smiles. The crowd has surrounded the counter. There are the first summer flowers, surprising by its warm energy. London does not go down for a minute. The summer has come!
The bright beams of the sun and lively conversations penetrate through the open window at 221B Baker Street. Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes are sitting at the table and drinking coffee. Last months they saw each other rarely because of certain circumstances. They want to spend this morning in loneliness to discuss the latest events of their never dull lives. Sherlock picks up a newspaper and reads the title of the first page, written in bold: “Trooping the Colour”. Holmes turns over the page and reads: “Ladies and gentlemen! The grand event is going to happen on the 16th of June. Her Majesty the Queen will be traveling in a carriage, surrounded by her loyal Guardsmen. Then the horse and foot Guardsmen will carry the flag. Everyone will be able to see Her Majesty the Queen. It is a great honour and wonderful opportunity for our people!”

Chapter 1
Unexpected visitor

- Sherlock, we have decided not to take for any affair temporarily, - I noticed with displeasure.
- "My dear friend, I'm not going to do it.
- But you are smoking your pipe, and this means that you are interested in this case - said I sarcastically.
- You do not have to worry, - Sherlock has convinced me - I only drive away from myself the melancholy of today’s morning.
- I look forward to it.
They chatted and did not notice that the bigger half of the day has passed. The knock on the door brought them into reality. At first it was easy, then very persistent.
- Watson, open the door, please.
- But you also have a maid!
- I gave her a holiday for a couple of days. Please, do me a favor; I do not want to jump to my feet from my chair.
- Where do you take this natural ability to persuade people ? – I whispered and went to the door.
- Good morning, Gentlemen! - said the stranger politely.
- Good morning, Sir. Can I help you?
- I would like to see Mr. Sherlock Holmes. I have heard he lives here. Could you call him?
- Dr. Watson, are you going to keep this person on the verge? - Sherlock's voice came from the next room.
I smiled and without a second’s thought invited him to enter.
- Sit down, please - Holmes pointed out to him the chair beside the fireplace.
- My name is Charles and I’m… – the stranger did not have time to finish, as he was interrupted.
- You are the first Queen’s assistant. And you are an agent of Her Majesty.
- But how did you guess that I am I? Great Heavens! - exclaimed Charles. – You are Sherlock Holmes, aren’t you? You are our last hope!
- Holmes, you are right again! How have you understood it?
- Elementary, Watson! – Holmes smiled pleasantly – There is a ring with the unicorn on Charles’ finger. And as you know, it is one of the symbols of England. The handkerchief with the English coat of arms on it is sticking out of his pocket. He speaks clearly, and when he came to the chair he sat carefully on it. He has the slow motions, smoothing gestures and good manners.
- Dear Holmes, I find myself amazed by you! – said I.
- Has something awful happened with Her Majesty? – I asked. – Is she in danger?
- She is all right, ¬– Charles reassured us.
- But something sad happened. And I can imagine what it was. – Holmes lit his pipe again. –
It concerns the Queen Victoria’s Guardsmen. And I am sure of it because I haven’t seen the Guardsmen near the palace of Her Majesty this morning.
- Yes, It is true. Someone stole the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen. We have only several of them. But more than 100 headdresses were stolen! – Charles complained. - If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation!
- We are starting to help you right now! – Exclaimed I. – Let’s check the palace.

Chapter 2
Nobody saw

Mr. Sherlock Holmes, Sir Charles and I went to the palace. The Queen was absent but the palace with its huge paned windows, high ceilings and echoing corridors was filled with the servants running to- and- fro through the castle. We went down the sweeping stone steps and I saw many corridors with the huge wooden doors. Holmes looked into each door and it took him just one minute to notice everything.
- Who are you and what do you want? – asked somebody dissatisfied.
- They help us to solve our problem, - Charles whispered politely.
- Try not to make noise! – warned the woman and went out.
- What happened with the woman’s head? – asked Holmes.
- It’s a strange story. – answered Charles. - She went for a walk in the garden. But there are too many short trees in it. She stopped under the apple tree and a big apple fell on her head. She fainted and had been lying there for several hours.
We had a talk with everyone who was on the Pages’ Lobby and other servants, but nobody knew about the loss of the headdresses. So, we inspected the palace and returned home.

Chapter 3
The guilty apple

When I went down from my room to have breakfast, Holmes, as usual, was smoking his pipe. He was writing something on a big piece of paper. He wrote again and stroke something out, stroke out and wrote. I didn’t want to disturb him and because of it I started drinking coffee.
Two hours passed, but Holmes was also at his desk. And he was still writing something. Suddenly he jumped to his feet, put on his coat, took his hat and ran out into the street. I had to follow him.
- Holmes, where are we going? – I shouted as I reached him.
We caught a taxi and it delivered us to the Victoria’s palace. Holmes found Sir Charles and said something to him. We went down the ladder and started asking everyone again.
- Who are you and what do you want? – asked a voice I knew well.
We looked around a saw a woman, who we had seen before. And she asked the same question.
- Laura, - Sir Charles said lovely. – They are our visitors. Go to your room, please.
- Why has she asked it again? – surprised I.
- I don’t know, - Charles explained.
We didn’t find other interesting things. So, we decided to return home.
Holmes hasn’t been sleeping for the rest of the night. And when I woke up, he was looking very sad.
- Holmes, you need a rest! – remarked I.
- Yes, but I must understand who has stolen the headdresses, – he admitted.
Suddenly he jumped out of his chair again, put on his coat, took his hat and ran into the street. And I also had to follow him. When we got to the palace, Sherlock ran to Sir Charles.
- I know! I know! – exclaimed he. – There are no thieves.
- Why do you think so? – Charles asked.
- Elementary, my dear! Call me the strange woman. – asked Holmes politely. - Her name is Laura, as I know.
- You stole the headdresses! – Sherlock accused her.
- What? W-w-w-what have you said? – her voice was trembling.
- But it's not your fault. You didn’t know about it.
- What are you talking about? – interfered Charles.
- You said, that she had gone for a walk in the garden. But there were too many short trees in it. She made a stop under the apple tree and a big apple fell on her head. She fainted and had been lying there for several hours. – claimed Holmes. – So, she lost her memory. And I know she is from the household staff, a footwoman. Her duty is to polish and stitch gold-embossed buttons on to dozens of uniforms . Besides she washes the Guardsmen’s clothes, cleans their boots.
I also noticed a piece of a bear’s wool on her shoes. So, let’s go to the laundry and have a look there.
We opened the laundry’s door and saw many headdresses.
- Holmes, but how…
- My dear friends! – Holmes smiled seriously. – This is her job to clean and wash the Queen Victoria Guardsmen’s things. And as we can see, there are holes on the headdresses. And she only wanted to repair them. But the guilty apple got her into trouble, she completely forgot about her plans.

Chapter 4
Trooping the Colour

Holmes takes a newspaper and reads: “Trooping the Colour”. He turns over the page: “It was really amazing. Her Majesty the Queen Victoria looked perfect! Her Guardsmen proudly marched along the square, carrying a flag on their shoulders. England has never seen them so impressive and eye-catching. The ceremony has been wonderfully arranged. ”

Trick under the dome.
One sunny and warm morning Mr. Sherlock Holmes and I were visited at our house, Baker street, 221-b, by the pale and nervous Constable of Her Majesty the Queen. His name was Henry Sanders. He looked very frightened and he had something to say. His new was incredible: the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen had been stolen. He started crying:
- Bearskins – our pride and privilege! In three days an outstanding procession is to take place – the Queens’ equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation. If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation! The best detectives are involved. But only you can help us!
I listened to him very carefully. When I looked at Holmes, I saw that he was very calm. He stared at one point and crossed his fingers. He was thinking. He had been sitting like this for fifteen minutes. The Constable was shocked. I think, he hoped to see how Holmes would stand up and run to the scene. Mr. Sanders was very upset. He couldn’t sit or stay. He was walking from wall to wall. He took a newspaper but suddenly put it on the table. He became paler.
– If the newspapers get known about this problem… We are buried.
Sherlock raised his eyes:
- So we need to be fast. Watson, we are going to the palace.
Mr. Sanders relieved:
-And what was I trying to show you last twenty minutes?
***

When we came to the Buckingham Palace, there was nervous vanity. Everyone was silent but, I noticed, that they were talking using their eyes. Certainly, all Queens’ family was informed about the situation. We passed a lot of rooms. Suddenly, we turned to a small dark corridor. There was a thick metal door with a big lock on its’ handle.
– Usually, two guardsmen stay here but now there is no need in such measures. – said Mr. Sanders with bitterness on his face.
He opened the door.
– In this corridor there are 5 such rooms with bearskins. But only this one was robbed. We can’t start procession without bearskins from this room!
– I hope you didn’t touch anything in this room. – said Holmes. – Your random acts could spoil the investigation.
– No, everything should be alright. After the crime we closed the door and didn’t let people come here. The police and other detectives tried to come here but their efforts were not successful.
We saw the big room with a lot of shelves for bearskins. The room was like in a hospital – very clean and light. There were no windows or other doors. I couldn’t see the signs of the crime. Everything was normal and usual. Holmes frowned.
– When was the crime? – he asked walking through the endless rows of shelves.
– Yesterday in the night. But we found the crime only in the morning.
- How did you find it?
– I’m responsible for the Guardsmen. Every morning and evening I open and close this room. Everything was fine when I closed this door in the evening. In the morning when I opened this door I saw the missing.
– Could you lose the key somewhere?
– No, the key is always with me, on my neck. Nobody could still it. I sleep very sensitive.
– Has this key a duplicate?
– Yes, but it is with the Queen always.
– Could she lose it?
– No, all her keys are under the strictest guard. All men were carefully checked. There is a special password. Nobody knows it except Queen and the Guardsman. The password changes every day. Only Queen has a key of the key store. Signs of tampering in the store were not found.
I looked through the shelves. Nothing remarkable. My sight fell down on the floor. I saw barely distinguishable footprint. It was too small to be adults’. I listened to the talk of Holmes’ and Mr. Sanders’. But there was no sound. I called Sherlock:
- Holmes, I found something really interesting! You must see it!
He ran to me and saw the footprint.
– Very well, Watson!
He looked to the wall behind one of the shelves. There were some of the same footprints under the shelf. Holmes touched the footprint by his finger. The color was grey. Suddenly, Holmes’ face cleared.
– How many years ago did you do here a repair? – he asked.
– Only two month ago…
- Mr. Sanders!!! Queen! – a young man ran into the room. – She wants to meet with you! She is waiting for you in her study!
– What?! – The Constable cried. – Why now? Ok’, I’m coming. Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson, can I leave you for some minutes?
– Of course, you can. – Holmes answered. – If you don’t mind we will stay here.
– Mr. Sanders! – the man called him.
– Yes, I’m on the way! Stay here, Mr. Holmes. I‘ll try to be fast.
And he ran away. Holmes closed the door and went to the wall. He took out a penknife and sat down. He tapped at the floor and suddenly I saw a small square contour on it. Sherlock raised this part and we saw a hole.
– Aha! That’s how they penetrated here! - he exclaimed.
– But Holmes, this hole is too small for adult. Do you think, it was a child?
- Not excluded. – he answered. – But I have another idea. Did you notice that dimly expressed smell when we came here?
– No.
– But I noticed. It was the smell of animals.
– So, you think, the robbers were from the zoo? – I caught a shadow of irony in my question.
– No. Watson, have you ever been to the “Amphitheater Astley”? It’s a circus of horse riding.
– Why do you think that robbers were from the circus?
– Look at this hole. Distance to the ground is too big for a small person. He had to jump. And such hop only trained man could do.
– But somebody could throw him…
- No, couldn’t. Here was only one man. I’ll prove it.
He took out a small torch and sent the light into the hole.
– Do you see another hole there?
I carefully looked through the walls and saw a small hole. Several rays bravely fought their way through it. The hole was too small for a man with normal height. Holmes sent light to the ground. There were footprints like in the room. But the amount of them was too small for several people. Holmes turned to me with a smile:
- So, Watson. Do you want to see a performance?
***

Next day we went to the circus of horses. Mr. Sanders was shocked by our idea to go to the circus. But we didn’t explain it. Firstly, Holmes decided to watch the performance. He wanted to prove his suggestions. The performance started. We saw a woman on a black horse. The woman was very beautiful. She had long red hair, brown eyes, gaunt figure. She wore a Spanish dress with a lot of frills and a small old hat with flowers and colored feathers. She did a lot of stunts on the horse. Everyone was amazed by her beauty and grace. I looked at Holmes. He was tense and pensive. The next statement was with two brothers dwarfs. Now I became tense. Sherlock whispered:
- It’s time.
We stood up and went backstage. Fortunately, there was no guard. We hid behind the boxes with requisite. We heard handclap. It meant that the performance finished. We saw the dwarfs. They went to their cloakroom. We went there too. Holmes said:
- Stay here, we want to talk with you.
But they had another solution. They ran out of the room with cries: “Help us!” They ran to the corral with horses. We ran after them. Suddenly the woman in Spanish dress came out:
- Oh, what happened?
She had a really strange accent but her voice was beautiful.
– Watson, catch her! She is a participant of the crime!
I tried to not to look at her. I kept her in my arms. But she was very strong for woman. She stepped on my foot by her heel. Tears gushed from my eyes. The woman wriggled out of my hands and tried to run but she stumbled over my leg and fell down. I helped her to get up but I hold her very hard. She couldn’t run away. Holmes returned holding one of the dwarfs. Another brother was held by a police man. – Now you must tell us everything – said Holmes.
We went to the nearest police station. Holmes found the bearskins in the boxes with the requisite. The robbers were isolated in a small room with the guard near the door.
So we had all evidences. Now we needed explanations. Holmes didn’t hurry. He was the master of this situation. With a happy face he walked from wall to wall then he slowly sat down. We prepared to listen.
– I explained you, Watson, why I suspected the dwarfs. They were small but strong as adults. A child couldn’t bring out 50 bearskins on his back. It’s too heavy. But I didn’t think about two dwarfs. There weren’t a lot of footprints. Obviously, they tried to walk by one way, not to go in different parts of room.
– But for what did they steal the bearskins? – asked the police man. – It’s the next part of my story. – smiled Sherlock. – I think, Watson, you were surprised when I told you to catch the woman. Did you notice her accent?
I nodded. Holmes continued:
- She is from Denmark.
We sighed loudly. Everyone remembered the recent war with Denmark.
– Can you bring her here? – said Holmes to the policeman.
– Yes, of course.
When they came in, I noticed that woman had red eyes and uncured tears. She looked sad bur here eyes were flashing lightning.
- What is your name? – asked Holmes.
– Ingrid Johansen. – her voice broke.
– What is your job?
– I was a stuntwoman but now I’m an agent of Denmark’s Government.
– Why did you decide to steal the bearskins?
– Because it could greatly spoil the reputation of Britain.
I was surprised by her answers. She was sincere and she answered without hesitations.
– Are dwarfs from Denmark too?
– No, I met them in the circus. I promised to take them with me back in Denmark. – she smiled sadly.
– Stop, Holmes! But how did you get known that she was a participant too? – I asked.
– I found near the Buckingham palace a bright feather. – Holmes answered softly. I looked at the old hat on the Ingrid’s head. Some feathers were lost.

We returned all bearskins to the Mr. Sanders. He hugged us very hard. The returning of the bearskins meant that he would stay on his work. We had the audience with the Queen. She thanked us and gave a solid reward. Ingrid Johansen with two brothers was put into prison. Later I remembered her several times. In the evening after the meeting with Queen we were at our house. Holmes was reading a newspaper and I was looking in the fireplace and thinking about circus. Suddenly we heard a knock. I opened the door and saw Henry Sanders. I felt a fright.
– Friends, I have got a problem! Someone has stolen my gold watches. Can you help me?
I and Sherlock laughed.
– Not now. – said I and closed the door.
No more adventures for today.

Your story is wonderful. You are very closed to Conan Doyle style and you show Holmes’s classical methods to solve the crime.

Shark`s dims.
Halfisch(germ.) – shark.
One rainy morning Mr. Sherlock Holmes is visited at his house, Baker street,221-b, by the shocked Constable of Her Majesty the Queen. His news is incredible: the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen have been stolen. Bearskins – their pride and privilege! In three days an outstanding historic procession is to take place – the Queens’ equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation. If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation! The best detectives are involved. But the only hope is Sherlock Holmes. How will the crime of the century be solved? The great detective starts building a logic chain: if he could understand what for the cunning and ingenious thieves needed to take the Guardsmen’s famous attributes, he would manage to be on the track of the criminal
* * *
-You know, Watson, this crime is doomed to fail – said Holmes smiling after the constable`s departure – I’m sure everything is rather primitive in this mysterious situation. We will have investigated this thing by the evening, I think.
Having said so, he left the room.
I had not seen him till the evening –my medical practice does not allow me to leave my patients even for the sake of my close friend. Having finished my pursuit I returned to Baker street and started waiting for Holmes. As a result I fell asleep and was awaken by the squeak of the stairs.
- Who is here? Oh, this is you, Watson – said somebody in the darkness. – Switch on the light and try to find something hot to drink. I`m chilled to the marrow. But don`t disturb Mrs. Hudson please.
When I was a regimental doctor I was good at cooking warming beverage. Well, I hope that Mrs. Hudson won`t be angry if I exercise my sway over her kitchen.
- Oh, my God! Holmes, you are looking so loathsome! – amazingly exclaimed I. Really, my friend resembled a dirty pauper from the docks but not a detective.
- Watson, this story is worse than I expected – said Holmes, taking a drink.
Having made a pipe draw ,he continued:
- Though, Constable Parker mentioned urgency of the case he didn`t take into account lots of details. Probably, it was the fault of his bosses. Or he felt shy in front of you, a strict doctor – grinned Holmes.
In a minute Holmes said:
- I won`t go into details, I will say only one thing: the Queen`s equipage with Guardsmen`s participation will take place by all means. Who was eager to take these bearskins, judge for yourself? It is only ground for committing another more severe crime. As a matter of fact, I have found the bearskins already. By the way, Watson – said Holmes with great animation – what do you know about the poison of the snake Oxyuranus microlepidotus?
-You know, that I have no information. Aren`t you going to speak?
- It is called a “cruel snake” and it speaks for itself.. It lives only in Australia and its poison is fifty times stronger than cobra`s one.
- The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Richard Halfisch, had been killed by exactly the same poison. I found his body near the bearskins in the basement of one of the suburbs.
I gave him a puzzled look.
- Do you really know it? It can`t be a plot!
- - Of course not, my dear. I`m sure you are eager to ask me lots of questions – said Holmes melancholically. – But I`m afraid I won`t be able to satisfy your curiosity to the full extent. So, I will only enumerate the facts. Here they are: absurd crime with the aim of committing another crime. One of the accomplices, sir Halfisch, is found dead in the docks of the East-End. All the bearskins are found there too. Tops of them are ripped off.
- You are certain to have investigated it. But how?
- It is elementary, my dear Watson. Dirt in the East- End docks is unique. Ether the colour or the smell speak for themselves. This very dirt was found by me in the store-room of Her Majesty`s palace. Valiant detectives of Scotland-Yard had missed it. And the criminal behaved too absently: haste prevented them from hiding evidence. They left a lot of traces , which could be easily found by such an experienced investigator as me. It was as easy for me, as difference of symptoms of flu and symptoms of some serious disease. Though they were identical sometimes.
Holmes stopped talking and stared at the fire in the fireplace. Meanwhile the clock in the living room struck twice. The sound seemed to awaken Sherlock Holmes and he said smiling:
- Go to bed, Watson. I`ll tell you all this story in details tomorrow morning. And the criminals are sure to have been apprehended by that moment.
I climbed upstairs, went to bed, but could not fall asleep. Strange ideas and pictures crowded in my mind: lots of Guardsmen`s bearskins, ripped off tops, huge venomous snake, creeping along the rotten channel of the suburb, some indefinite opium smoking house, poor sir Richard – in short, pieces of incoherent picture, which I tried to realized. Then I failed…
* * *
But for the military habit, your narrator would have been dead already. I don`t know what made me awake: rustle, foreboding of evil or thirst. Having opened my eyes I saw two silhouettes in the darkness of the morning. They were unlikely to notice me open the eyes,as they were searching for something in the drawers of my desk.
I turned my head a little, trying to understand whether I would be able to reach and take the revolver, lying on the night-table.
Suddenly one of the silhouettes bumped against the bookcase and swore.
- Deuce take it, Emmy! You will awake him – whispered male`s voice
- -Go and check whether the detective is sleeping – answered him the female voice.
I closed my eyes and pretended to be sleeping. I felt somebody`s breath quite near me.
Some minutes of wearisome expectation followed…
- Everything is alright. He is sleeping.
Suddenly somebody knocked at my door.
- Watson, wake up and get ready! I have found the criminals!
Emmy`s constrained voice said:

- Oh, Joe! The game is up…
However the lady wasn’t confused or frightened. Having run up to my bed, she gripped a pillow and threw it on my face. She started to smother me.
- Hold him, Joe!
So Joe grabbed my hands firmly.
I desperately tried to break away from him but all my attempts were futile: Joe and Emmy smothered me very quickly.
The door trembled. more and more . Of course Holmes understood that something was going wrong. Or may be it wasn`t him?
- Hurry up, Emmy! – wheezed Joe.
Crackle…noise…tramp…
* * *
I recovered. The first thing I saw was an anxious face of my friend
- Watson, thanks God , you are all right – said Holmes hastily. –Sorry, I should not have exposed you to such a danger. Put on your clothes and come downstairs.

When I came there the first thing to attract my attention was the stained floor. “Poor Mrs. Hudson” – thought I.
- Watson, aren`t you hungry? Can it really be true? – asked Holmes entering the dinning-room.
- - Certainly not – said I.
Nevertheless I took my place at the table and put some spoonfuls of oatmeal porridge on the plate. While I was eating, my friend was watching me as a considerate doctor, taking care of a recovering patient.
After breakfast we made ourselves comfortable in the armchairs in front of the fireplace and Sherlock Holmes started his narration.
- When the young man, sir Richard Halfisch, got the post of the Minister for Foreign Affairs his financial situation left much to be desired. Inheritance testamented to him by his father, colonel Gorge Halfisch, consisted of debts and dubious will.
With these words Holmes extracted a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to me. A Gaurdsman’s bearskin was drawn there. Some kind of a diadem was painted next to it and the arrow pointed to the top of the bearskin. At the side a column of figures was written with the ink pencil.
- It was the only thing having been left by sir Gorge to his son. Probably sir Halfisch would not have made up his mind to commit such a shady enterprise, but for his wife, Emmy. So Emmy brought her Australian lover pretending to be a hired worker.
They had taken and carried everything to the docks working three together. While you were recovering upstairs, Emmy pleaded that she had poisoned her husband, having added snake`s poison into his tea. Instead of living the city, Emmy and Joe tried to steal the will. But due to irony of fate they mixed the rooms.
Holmes smiled sadly and lit his favorite pipe.
- You know the next adventures. You were the participant of them.
I sighed.
- Oh, Holmes, you have investigated so many crimes with me, being an eye-witness , and still, I wonder how you manage to do it?
- - Everything is very simple, my dear friend – smiled Holmes. – Here is the chain of events: death of sir Gorge, appointment of sir Richard to the post of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, stealing of bearskins, body of sir Richard, poison of Australian snake…It is not easy to find the logical chain, but when you do it - the result is clear.
Sherlock Holmes settled back, closed his eyes and took the violin…

Oh, your story was very bright and so theatrical! I like creative things and your story was that I needed.
Natasha, I liked your story very much! You showed that usual cases could spoil important events. You have got very exact descriptions of London in 19th century.
Benzin I loved your story! You combined love, politics and duty into one fascinating story. I couldn't broke away from the computer! And I liked the head of your story! It's very mysterious.

My comments.
To Tausneva:
It’s really fascinating to read your story. You have created an unusual plot. And it inspires me to write a new detective.
To Kozlova:
I’m fond of mysterious things, so I enjoyed your story, It’s about the dwarfs and it’s really amazing. And I like your idea to connect the plot of the story with the circus. There are no murders and I prefer it!
To Tzaryova:
You have created the really political detective story, both children and adults like this story.

Butler’s mistake

Watson was going for a walk to the park when suddenly having looked at the newspaper, he read “Famous detective Sherlock Holmes solves baffling disappearance!!!"
Watson took a cab and hurried to his friend to Baker street 221-B.
Sherlock Holmes was very excited. He told Watson the following story.
Two days ago on the rainy morning a mysterious guest visited him. It was Constable of Her Majesty the Queen. His news was incredible: the Queen`s Guardsmen were missing their bear skins - their pride and privelege! The situation grew worse as it was the coming time of Queen`s jubelee!
Inside the Buckingham Palace everyone was preparing for this celebration. In three days an outstanding historic procession will be held- the Queen`s equipage with the Guardsmen`s participation. If the bearskins are not found - a shame on the nation!
"That means you are working on a case?" - asked Watson. He always found it pleasant to be once more in Sherlock Holmes`s office where so many unusual adventures had had their beginning.
"Yes, and I know the thief."
"How do you know?" asked Watson.
It is my business to know what other people don’t know." - Holmes smiled. Then Sherlock took an old newspaper and showed him a newspaper clipping.
"Servants are banned to keep puppies at the Queen`s palace."
"That’s true, but how does it explain the crime?"
Sherlock Holmes approached the desk and took out a small plate with the leftover of doggie`s food.
"I discovered it in the private room of the Queen`s butler. This is precisely what we need, Watson. It is a clue. Now we can find a thief. It is time to go to the palace to make the thief confess the crime."
They took a cab and drove to the palace. In half an hour Holmes was speaking with the highest administration of the palace.
"Please, let’s go to the underground room and look for the guilty." - said Holmes politely to the servants.
Then Sherlock Holmes and his friend Watson went straight to the underground room.
"Now," - said Sherlock Holmes, -" I will tell you the location of the bearskins. Watson, please, open this pantry."
Watson opened the door of a small, hidden among shabby curtains pantry. There were a lot of bearskins lying on the shelves. Some of them were ragged.
"But who is the thief?"
"And who is responsible for the upkeep of the Queen’s corgis? - asked Sherlock Holmes and took out from the corner of the pantry the dog’s collar which had a round disk that carried the words ”HM The Queen”
“We have the only most caring dog-owner at the palace. He is Paul Ford and he is Her Majesty’s butler.”-said one of the servants in a low voice. Suddenly a slight sound of barking reached Watson’s ears. Everyone turned to the farthest door of the corridor.

One of the servants opened the door and all the people saw two little sleepy puppies. When the light blinded them, they greeted the strangers with a chorus of growls and barks. Holmes laughed: ”I admit, they are to blame!”
"It was like that," – continued Holmes. "Butler loved his little doggies very much and used to hide the puppies in the basement. But he didn’t expect the maid to fetch there some bearskins to get dry after the laundry. While the butler was absent, the fighting puppies tore the headdresses into pieces. But when the butler saw it, he was scared to death and hid the bearskins in this pantry" In haste he left a small plate for a dog feeding in the kitchen for servants. It was a big mistake…
All kept silence.
"Look!" - said Holmes suddenly.
Watson turned his head and saw a shadow pass over the window.
"What is it?" - asked Watson.
"The butler," - explained Holmes. "I think we’ll never see him again”

2. My comments.
To Emel’yanov:
Interesting plot and touching outcome. And what a gentleman Sherlock Holmes is! I like this story!

Dear Natalia Ivanovna, my dear participants,
First of all I want to thank everyone for a completed task. There is pride in what we have done together. I couldn't imagine how talented my students are! Natasha Vlasova, you have my complete respect as your poems make my heart proud of you and our school you represent in the contest! Thanks a lot for your mobility and talent, of course!
Certainly I tried to be the driving force of the project, but,Natalia Ivanovna, I didn't influence my students, gave them freedom in choice and slightly corrected some papers as I am sure correction doesn't always lead to an improvement but very often undermines the students' confidence. The idea of the contest is super! When we started the project I was greatly surprised how little my students know about Conan Doyle and his immortal character Sherlock Holmes. Many other students have never read or heard about Sherlock. And the first important merit of the contest is that it can motivate a student to read widely , to enable him to seek more and more knowledge and it's very important!
The project teaches children to be responsible for everything they do, to be interested in English Literature and have a burning desire to learn and love.
But you also invited the junior students ( Year 5-6) to take part in the competition, and I think some tasks, questions were not relevant to the age level, besides, I wish some assignments could be more creative! And why was the task given in Russian and the students should answer it in English? And certainly-the time limit! Some tasks were to be done on the days off.We, teachers, don't have the right to make children work on Sundays, their parents can make a complain to the highest administration. It's easy nowadays. And they are right as students are overloaded today.
So, thanks a lot for your ideas. We all enjoyed keeping ourselves busy and found the project incredibly interesting and useful!!

Dear Lesya,
As I think detective stories contain a lot of information and a good, old hand detective must be able to take off the smallest details even from the grain of mud. But unfortunately, there are both good and bad characters. And they also can use this valuable information.

Hello, dear participants!
First of all I would like to congratulate you with a very successful and fruitful start of writing stories. Moreover, it is a great contribution to the memory of an outstanding writer, Conan Doyle. Most of your stories have proved that the detective genre will live for ever. Thank you, dear Galina Ivanovna, for such a friendly team, trying to show their best and making efforts to get to the top where Pegas is spreading his wings!
And now I would like to answer the questions you have addressed during your discussions at your “working site” (I mean in class).
Kozlova: “Why are there so few members of the contest? Whose mistake is it?”
This contest is the first in the history of the distant contests having ever been arranged in commemoration of the literal inheritance of Conan Doyle. Obviously, there appeared some fear from the side of the part of potential applicators. Another reason is that there are a number of distant arrangements, such as projects, courses, Olympiads, which are held by Eidos. The visitors of Eidos’s web-site have chosen some other items among the variety of the suggested ones. I shan’t spread upon the other reasons, but I believe you did not regret for having taken part in this contest.
Tsaryova: “Shall we get your comments in the forum after the contest has finished?”
My short comment s will follow very soon.
Shubina: “What did you expect of this contest? Has it justified your expectactions?”
I was sure that the most talented and courageous persons can only contest with that very Conan Doyle! But I could not imagine that some of your stories were at such a high level from the professional point of view of the story-maker. Your have been very ardent and diligent in writing, shown psychological depth, fantasy and irony and of course, love and devotion to the great English master of detectives. Some of your works have really exceeded my expectations .
Rakovetskaya: “Some tasks were too difficult. We needed more time to complete them.”
I agree with you. A good story needs time and contemplation. But the more you brain is plunged with work, the more speedy it works and the productivity is higher, isn’t it?

Dear Galina Ivanovna,
I appreciate your remarks and comments very much. Frankly speaking, when something is done for the first time, it seldom occurs that everything goes tiptop. Initially the project was proposed to be for elder schoolchildren. However at the end the age limit was lowered. In future the tasks might be subdivided into groups: for junior and senior participants. For the first group the tasks will be more simple, for sure.
As for the assignments are concerned, your suggestion is worth being thought over.
As for the tasks in Russian, all the information, recommendations, requirements for work presentation are supposed to be in Russian in order to get familiar with them without any problems. With regard to the chat tasks – if younger children took part in the chat lesson, they would be able to answer in Russian. It is important to learn not to be afraid of the questions, as well as to express one’s own opinion and find arguments.
And the last point I would like to touch upon is the time limit. If Eidos contests are to be considered as supplementary home lessons, a sort of self-tuition, the parents should be glad only, when their beloved offspring is occupied by mental activity, of course, within reasonable limits. Nevertheless, the question of more effective time schedule will be discussed with Eidos project management.
In conclusion, I would like to thank you for your kind attention to the project, active and fruitful work and wish your students and you new discoveries in the process of the world cognition.

Ben Taylor.
Dear participants! Our contest is over but you are always welcome to Eidos events. You have great potential. Reveal it!

Best regards,
Plotnikova Natalia Ivanovna
Project coordinator.
