You like poetry and you have what to say to others, don’t you? You are ardent and like the spirit of competition, isn’t it so? Congratulations! You are the very person who should participate in a poetical tournament on the forum of Distant Center of Education “Eidos”. So today we invite you to be one of the participants of a poetical tournament which will be held in the form of discussion.

The theme of the discussion: “You can't write poetry on the computer”. Quentin Tarantino

The terms of the discussion: Post your poem on the theme of discussion on the forum. Besides you should read the poems of other at least 2 participants and express your own opinion, agreement or disagreement with their authors.

Computer is a great invention,
We cannot live without it.
Computers save the time and money,
This fact can everyone admits.

The 21st century is quick and fast,
It brings a progress every moment.
And we cannot waste our time,
That’s why the world invented robots.

Computers lighten our life,
They seldom make any mistakes.
It’s easier to live with them,
Computers like the human’s brains.

But everything cannot be perfect
And robots have the drawbacks too.
They carry out any work you ask for,
But the creative work can’t do.

Computers can play chess or cards
And always win you in spite your skills.
But different games are just a program
That doesn’t need some human sense.

In spite of all computer’s merits
It cannot help us to create
The works of arts, that need lots of feelings,
And can’t be by a heartless robots made.

So, I consider, that computers
Make our life a simple one.
But I’m sure no computer
Can write a poem, except a man.

Computer intelligence and human brain
So, what can I say?
I’ll try to find among them main.
I think, it is the brain.

You’ll never trust the computer all those:
Your feelings, emotions and thoughts.
You only can operate with the work
Yes, or maybe not?

It will never produce that
Your soul can produce in fact.
It only will serve to show,
The work you made your own.
But it will never express
The real ideas, emotions
I guess.

Poetry! What does it mean? It is an art
To show your own opinion through some words,
Word combinations, using different kinds of metaphors.
Contrast, compare some events through some phenomena.

You’ll take a book with poems, you will read,
You’ll understand the feeling of the author,
Because it’s only in the human forces
To realize the writer’s thoughts, emotions.

A person, who decides to write a poem,
Can show, express his view on life, on problems
With using different words and word expressions,
That isn’t carry only straight meanings but figurative also.

Just try to give a command to a computer
To write a poem, not very long, and although
It is a very clever machine with different systems,
In any way it will fail all his attempts.

You see, that the computer was invented
To calculate, to count up and solve some problems.
But not to think in a creative way. It can’t be so.

It is impossible to him to choose the right word
Because he doesn’t think about the whole idea of the work.
At last, I’d like to tell you that the poetry
Like an amazing picture on the wall
Looking at which, you feel exciting and enjoyable
Which gives you many points to live.

Which have the same idea,
That computer and poetry are different things
And they are incompatible.

Gulkai and Kate say that a computer
Is the machine without a soul.
It isn’t able to love, to suffer,
It is indifferent and cold.

It can’t express like any poet
His feelings, attitude and dreams.
So, let computers count something,
And a man write poems.

But here you can’t think wider
Because you are only a user!
You can play complex games

And you have a heart
That’s why sometimes life seems hard.

Computers, Internet, Machines
Become more steadily for us.
Become we lazy and useless
As all the work is done for us.

We all the nights sit at them
And click, and click, and click again.
Become we irritated, stressed,
And don’t mind what’ll happen next.

We have forgotten sense of life
But we can live and be alive
We seldom speak and seldom think
We aren’t happy, we’re just sick.

Computers only the machines
They can’t express emotions, fears
They can’t show feelings and the mind,
And they can’t show the poem’s heart.

But we can love, dream and forgive,
But we can taste, feel and believe,
We also know, we think, relieve
I make a conclusion, we are not machines!

We depend on computers
And they also depend on us
But we are the humans
And they are only technologies.

The base of this mechanism

In some strict sequences.

The soul of any people
Is based on sincere senses.
We can feel, cry, worried
But computer can’t do it.

You mean, that the machine can’t write itself.
My dear teacher?
O’k. I think you are quite right’
And there is nothing we could fight.
So, our world is nice and large
And no one tries to think too much.
We all have got that bad machines,
Which can’t improve our English skills.
We all have got that good machine,
Which make odd work that we don’t feel.
I love computer for it’s helpful
And so you do just for the same.
However, something makes me think,
That the machines not just play prinks.
What will be if one nice day,
We, you and I and they,
Become useless in all ways?
All computers are like monsters,
Teach us, tease us giving orders.
World is on the brink of tears,
For nothing good goes on for years.
Wake up, people! Don’t you see?
Machines are working just for spree!
So, what a shame!
Instead of using our brains,

Forget about our culture,

Don’t pay attention for the nature,

And with pencil or pen
Your brains work greater
And cross and tore you can.

If you see a lot of paper on the floor
It seems that you are working more
Than if you look in empty screen

You correct by “Delete” your mistake
But you can’t your computer take
And throw away in the window
Because its weight and price not low.

Can’t you write poetry on the computer?
Why? I can everything! All that I want!
Computer’s my helper. Computer’s my friend
It gives information, knowledge you want.

I write all my tasks, exercises and songs
I watch many films on computer itself
It helps me to write and it help me to work
I could write this poetry on computer myself

Frankly speaking I must say
That computers help us anyway.
Many sides of our life
Are connected with the files.
Poetry is no exception,
That’s may be my own perception.
Other thing is to discuss:
Is there poetry inside of us?
If a person can’t make rhymes
He may try a lot of times
Writing, printing, other things –
Useless will be these routines.
Rhymes and poems are the parts
Which come up from our hearts.
Other question may arise:
Can computers make you rhymes?
Yes, of course, they can do this:
Make you rhymes and other things.
But the poetry’s main goal
Is to touch us deep in soul.
So, from this my point of view
There’s no help for me and you.
My advice will be, my friends:
Try to make your rhymes yourselves.

A poet is a person who doesn't know where
He should create his poems - Indeed he doesn't care!
The thing is inspiration - it comes just when it wants
without invitation - and so a poet learns:
To write his thoughts on napkins, to write it while it flies
not always it's romantic, not always in the sky
He does it when he is sure his masterpiece’ll be born
the thing is: he must do it before inspiration’s gone!

Though my eyes see the keys,
Fingers do as they please.
They start words like “white” with “S”,
Though they very well know
That “S” is one key below
And reversal will not impress.

But look at some lines without rhythm or rhymes
Where semblance to verse is but fleeting.
And the tightly clenched fist will never assist
Or will words that do not bear repeating.

I'm really vexed
As they’ve lost my text,
And I can't find its new hidden venue.
The DELETE command has shown its hand,
I'll delete the damn thing from my menu.

There seems to be strain
Between fingers and brain
And I feel I would like to mention,
When my fingers typed “white”
And it didn't sound right,
Please believe it was not my intention.

My work:
Why have you rushed to conclusion that
You can’t write poetry on the computer?
Just think about: it is said
To be convenient and much cuter!

I can’t object that a written verse
Is always easier to compose
Besides, computers do protect
The text from slang (it’s not correct):
The poet’s fancy’s like a bird –
He writes a poem like a gird
Or both bylina and converse
It can be lengthy, it can be terse.

But on the other hand, I think,
Though written verses are the pink,
Why not you try electronic rhymes?
We don’t live in ancient times!
It’s easier and far more quickly
It’s up to you: in details or meekly
You can correct the poem once
And twice, and thrice –
For your own device!

Thus, in conclusion, I’d like to note
Despite all this I do will vote
For electronics: it is as good
As written rhymes in any mood!

To rush to conclusion – делать поспешные выводы
Cuter – интереснее
Verse – поэзия
To protect – ограждать, предохранять
Gird – насмешка, колкость
Bylina – былина
Converse – обращение
Terse – сжатый, краткий, немногословный
The pink – нечто совершенное, верх, высшая степень
Meekly – кротко, смиренно
Thrice – трижды
