Dear Andrey! Thank you for your question. If in short, for me, a detective is a mystery, investigation and a caught criminal. To put it in a more detail, reading a good detective is first of all a pleasure to feel a good language, to be absorbed by the music of a high quality literature. Secondly, for me it’s of essential to be absolutely sure, that through a complicated plot there will be a bright and unpredictable denouement and Themis, a goddess of justice, will be celebrating her victory. Well, If the detective does not disappoint me, a good spirit through all day long will be guaranteed!

Dear, Natalia Ivanovna
I've read a lot of detective stories. And some of them were really exciting! I liked "The Hound of the Baskervilles". It was very interesting. And I liked the story called "Scandal in Bohemia". It was new for me when a woman can be very dangerous, but so beautiful!
There is a very good writer in Russia - Boris Akunin. His detective stories about Erast Fandorin are fascinating and so good that you can't stop reading them! He is one of my favorite writers.

I think modern style of writing a detective story hasn't quite changed, but still there are some changes.
For example, Holmes' method of investigating a crime is quite different from the methods of modern detectives.

I agree with Natasha Vlasova that detective fiction developes an ability to think clearly and exercise our mind. If we regulary read Sherlock Holmes we begin to understang his thinking secrets. And if we know these secrets, they can turn us into a first rate researches, "detectives inside ourselves".

One rainy morning Mr. Sherlock Holmes is visited at his house, Baker Street, 221-b, by shocked Constable of Her Majesty the Queen. His news is incredible: the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen have been stolen. Bearskins – their pride and privilege! In three days, an outstanding historic procession is to take place – the Queen’s equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation. If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation! The best detectives are involved. But the only hope is Sherlock Holmes. How will the crime of century be solved? The great detective starts building a logic chain: if he could understand what for the cunning and ingenious thief needed to take the Guardsmen’s famous attributes, he could manage to be on the track of the criminal.
Next day Holmes comes to the crime scene – cloakroom of the Guardsmen. Everything seemed generally, except open cupboards. After many hours of studying sites commencing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go home. Three days later:
-Watson, I know, who is a robber.
-Really? It was such an easy case?
-No! It was very difficult! But I was not in vain called the best detectives in the world. Look at this. What is it?
-It’s piece of red cloth.
-Yes. I found it on door of one of the cupboards. Robber caught his clothes on the cupboard when robed bearskins. Note, that it is made of the same material as the shape of the Guards.
- Holmes, you are so observant! I would never bother over such a trifle.
- In the case of detectives little things play a very important role.
-I’ll remember that.
-Ok. Let us not be distracted by extraneous conversations Than, there was blood on the floor. Maybe offender wounded when ran away. Hand of one of the guards was rewound. And finally the last piece of evidence – hair with a bearskin. I took it when we was on the crime scene. It was on there guardsman, who had a bandage hand.
-I understand you, dear Holmes. Robber- it is a wounded guardsman. But why?
-I know, that you ask me that question. His name is John Roadrunner. He was a contender for the post of captain of the Queen Guard, but it was another (им стал другой). John was very angry about it and about this man and wanted revenge. And than he thought, if he will steal headdresses of guardsmen equipage will be disrupted and man, who “stole” the John’s post will be dismissed.
-And he almost got it! If not you his plan would succeed.
-Okay! Lat us go to the Queen and tell her everything
That was solved the case about bearskins’ steel.

Case about Bearskins.

One grey morning Mr. Sherlock Holmes was visited at his house, Baker street, 221-b, by the excited Constable of Her Majesty the Queen.
- Oh, Mr. Holmes! – Constable started talking, hardly hiding impatience.
- We have something absolutely awful…
His news was incredible: the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen had been stolen. Bearskins – their pride and privilege!
- In three days, - said Constable,- an outstanding historic procession is to take place – the Queens’ equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation. If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation!
- I beg you, Mr. Holmes, go with me as soon as possible! – he added.

***
When Sherlock Holmes came to the place of crime, he looked around him at everything in the room and at last his eyes came back to the bright, smiling face of the guardsman Ben Taylor by name, who was the first to find out the loss.
I hoped that Holmes would share his thoughts with me, but he was silent. We were walking in silence, we reached our apartment on Baker street 221-b, keeping silence and in the same silence we had dinner. I bit my lip to stop myself asking him questions when we went to bed.
When in the morning I went downstairs to have breakfast, Holmes was already sitting at the table. He welcomed me and drew my attention to an announcement in a morning newspaper:

«Welcome to the theatre "Coliseum" to see the show

"Know the Grizzly Bear”.
On tonight’s show we give a perfect prize
to the person disguised in a Grizzly Bear.”

Watson: Are you going to start the investigation?
Holmes: Immediately. We must find some clues so we can catch these thieves. Look!
Watson: What is it? The ticket to the show?
Holmes: Yes, I found it when I was examining the room! (He looked at the ticket with a magnifying glass)
Watson: Let's go to the theatre.
Holmes: Hurry up, if you wish to play the game to the end!

We often went to the theatre with Holmes. We entered the building where we were met by the director of London theatre "Coliseum" Mr. Devis.
We passed to the corridor where there were make-up rooms for the staff of the theatre. Holmes asked, which room belonged to Ms. Uorder, and Mr. Devis pointed to the necessary door.
- Ms. Uorder is a remarkable actress, and she has been working at this theatre four years, - Mr. Devis said.
We stopped, and Holmes knocked loudly at the door.
- My name is Sherlock Holmes, - he said, - and this is Mr. Watson. I believe there is no need to represent Mr. Devis to you. We have come to help you, Ms. to finish your tricky story.

***
- Yesterday, much seemed to me strange but when I‘ve read the newspaper this morning, all things have been put into the logical order, - Sherlock Holmes explained.
- I was filled with the feeling that it was not an usual crime. It was obvious they wanted to demonstrate something, under the gaze of the media, I would tell, I t was a brave action but too theatrical.
And when I found the ticket to the show on the floor, I realized who helped to Ben Taylor.
Ben Taylor smiled at me yesterday but the fear went out of his eyes. It seemed to me suspicious. He tried to conceal something.
The motive of the crime is simple – Ms. Uorder and her groom Ben Taylor the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen are not rich. They do not have money for their wedding and the honeymoon. Ms. Uorder learns that at the theatre during the show it is possible to win the big prize. So she decides to steal headdresses and to make a costume of a Grizzly Bear out of them. They really believed their trick to be successful.
- There is no doubt, Ms, your groom is incredibly devoted to you.
- Yes, he loves me, and I love him.
All of us kept silent. Suddenly it was interrupted with silent sobbing of the actress.
- Forgive me! – Ms. Uorder whispered, wiping tears.
- Only now I understand, how absolutely foolish our action is!
- Yes, it was from your heart and not the head, - Sherlock Holmes smiled.

***
When we left the theatre, Constable of Her Majesty the Queen met us at the exit. He looked pale.
Be happy together and live a full life!-said Sherlock. A victorious smile returned to Ben Taylor’s face. - I am for ever indebted to you!-he exclaimed.
The next day a landmark occasion – the Queens’ equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation took place in London and the newspapers wrote it was the most spectacular event the Londoners had seen

«It is a very sad thing that nowadays there is so little useless information»
– Oscar Wilde

The harness of the horse has flashed outside the window. Merchants lure people and sell their goods. The neighboring children dart through the crowd. The men march slowly with hats on their heads, leaning on their canes. Local women look out of the windows and hang clothes. The sun blinds the passersby by its brightness. The day surprises everyone with its ease. The whole Baker Street is literally bursting with life. Both the winter and the spring used to be cold, and people have immediately thawed with the arrival of heat. Everybody smiles. The crowd has surrounded the counter. There are the first summer flowers, surprising by its warm energy. London does not go down for a minute. The summer has come!
The bright beams of the sun and lively conversations penetrate through the open window at 221B Baker Street. Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes are sitting at the table and drinking coffee. Last months they saw each other rarely because of certain circumstances. They want to spend this morning in loneliness to discuss the latest events of their never dull lives. Sherlock picks up a newspaper and reads the title of the first page, written in bold: “Trooping the Colour”. Holmes turns over the page and reads: “Ladies and gentlemen! The grand event is going to happen on the 16th of June. Her Majesty the Queen will be traveling in a carriage, surrounded by her loyal Guardsmen. Then the horse and foot Guardsmen will carry the flag. Everyone will be able to see Her Majesty the Queen. It is a great honour and wonderful opportunity for our people!”

Chapter 1
Unexpected visitor

- Sherlock, we have decided not to take for any affair temporarily, - I noticed with displeasure.
- "My dear friend, I'm not going to do it.
- But you are smoking your pipe, and this means that you are interested in this case - said I sarcastically.
- You do not have to worry, - Sherlock has convinced me - I only drive away from myself the melancholy of today’s morning.
- I look forward to it.
They chatted and did not notice that the bigger half of the day has passed. The knock on the door brought them into reality. At first it was easy, then very persistent.
- Watson, open the door, please.
- But you also have a maid!
- I gave her a holiday for a couple of days. Please, do me a favor; I do not want to jump to my feet from my chair.
- Where do you take this natural ability to persuade people ? – I whispered and went to the door.
- Good morning, Gentlemen! - said the stranger politely.
- Good morning, Sir. Can I help you?
- I would like to see Mr. Sherlock Holmes. I have heard he lives here. Could you call him?
- Dr. Watson, are you going to keep this person on the verge? - Sherlock's voice came from the next room.
I smiled and without a second’s thought invited him to enter.
- Sit down, please - Holmes pointed out to him the chair beside the fireplace.
- My name is Charles and I’m… – the stranger did not have time to finish, as he was interrupted.
- You are the first Queen’s assistant. And you are an agent of Her Majesty.
- But how did you guess that I am I? Great Heavens! - exclaimed Charles. – You are Sherlock Holmes, aren’t you? You are our last hope!
- Holmes, you are right again! How have you understood it?
- Elementary, Watson! – Holmes smiled pleasantly – There is a ring with the unicorn on Charles’ finger. And as you know, it is one of the symbols of England. The handkerchief with the English coat of arms on it is sticking out of his pocket. He speaks clearly, and when he came to the chair he sat carefully on it. He has the slow motions, smoothing gestures and good manners.
- Dear Holmes, I find myself amazed by you! – said I.
- Has something awful happened with Her Majesty? – I asked. – Is she in danger?
- She is all right, ¬– Charles reassured us.
- But something sad happened. And I can imagine what it was. – Holmes lit his pipe again. –
It concerns the Queen Victoria’s Guardsmen. And I am sure of it because I haven’t seen the Guardsmen near the palace of Her Majesty this morning.
- Yes, It is true. Someone stole the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen. We have only several of them. But more than 100 headdresses were stolen! – Charles complained. - If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation!
- We are starting to help you right now! – Exclaimed I. – Let’s check the palace.

Chapter 2
Nobody saw

Mr. Sherlock Holmes, Sir Charles and I went to the palace. The Queen was absent but the palace with its huge paned windows, high ceilings and echoing corridors was filled with the servants running to- and- fro through the castle. We went down the sweeping stone steps and I saw many corridors with the huge wooden doors. Holmes looked into each door and it took him just one minute to notice everything.
- Who are you and what do you want? – asked somebody dissatisfied.
- They help us to solve our problem, - Charles whispered politely.
- Try not to make noise! – warned the woman and went out.
- What happened with the woman’s head? – asked Holmes.
- It’s a strange story. – answered Charles. - She went for a walk in the garden. But there are too many short trees in it. She stopped under the apple tree and a big apple fell on her head. She fainted and had been lying there for several hours.
We had a talk with everyone who was on the Pages’ Lobby and other servants, but nobody knew about the loss of the headdresses. So, we inspected the palace and returned home.

Chapter 3
The guilty apple

When I went down from my room to have breakfast, Holmes, as usual, was smoking his pipe. He was writing something on a big piece of paper. He wrote again and stroke something out, stroke out and wrote. I didn’t want to disturb him and because of it I started drinking coffee.
Two hours passed, but Holmes was also at his desk. And he was still writing something. Suddenly he jumped to his feet, put on his coat, took his hat and ran out into the street. I had to follow him.
- Holmes, where are we going? – I shouted as I reached him.
We caught a taxi and it delivered us to the Victoria’s palace. Holmes found Sir Charles and said something to him. We went down the ladder and started asking everyone again.
- Who are you and what do you want? – asked a voice I knew well.
We looked around a saw a woman, who we had seen before. And she asked the same question.
- Laura, - Sir Charles said lovely. – They are our visitors. Go to your room, please.
- Why has she asked it again? – surprised I.
- I don’t know, - Charles explained.
We didn’t find other interesting things. So, we decided to return home.
Holmes hasn’t been sleeping for the rest of the night. And when I woke up, he was looking very sad.
- Holmes, you need a rest! – remarked I.
- Yes, but I must understand who has stolen the headdresses, – he admitted.
Suddenly he jumped out of his chair again, put on his coat, took his hat and ran into the street. And I also had to follow him. When we got to the palace, Sherlock ran to Sir Charles.
- I know! I know! – exclaimed he. – There are no thieves.
- Why do you think so? – Charles asked.
- Elementary, my dear! Call me the strange woman. – asked Holmes politely. - Her name is Laura, as I know.
- You stole the headdresses! – Sherlock accused her.
- What? W-w-w-what have you said? – her voice was trembling.
- But it's not your fault. You didn’t know about it.
- What are you talking about? – interfered Charles.
- You said, that she had gone for a walk in the garden. But there were too many short trees in it. She made a stop under the apple tree and a big apple fell on her head. She fainted and had been lying there for several hours. – claimed Holmes. – So, she lost her memory. And I know she is from the household staff, a footwoman. Her duty is to polish and stitch gold-embossed buttons on to dozens of uniforms . Besides she washes the Guardsmen’s clothes, cleans their boots.
I also noticed a piece of a bear’s wool on her shoes. So, let’s go to the laundry and have a look there.
We opened the laundry’s door and saw many headdresses.
- Holmes, but how…
- My dear friends! – Holmes smiled seriously. – This is her job to clean and wash the Queen Victoria Guardsmen’s things. And as we can see, there are holes on the headdresses. And she only wanted to repair them. But the guilty apple got her into trouble, she completely forgot about her plans.

Chapter 4
Trooping the Colour

Holmes takes a newspaper and reads: “Trooping the Colour”. He turns over the page: “It was really amazing. Her Majesty the Queen Victoria looked perfect! Her Guardsmen proudly marched along the square, carrying a flag on their shoulders. England has never seen them so impressive and eye-catching. The ceremony has been wonderfully arranged. ”

Trick under the dome.
One sunny and warm morning Mr. Sherlock Holmes and I were visited at our house, Baker street, 221-b, by the pale and nervous Constable of Her Majesty the Queen. His name was Henry Sanders. He looked very frightened and he had something to say. His new was incredible: the headdresses of all the Guardsmen of Her Majesty the Queen had been stolen. He started crying:
- Bearskins – our pride and privilege! In three days an outstanding procession is to take place – the Queens’ equipage with the Guardsmen’s participation. If the bearskins are not found – a shame on the nation! The best detectives are involved. But only you can help us!
I listened to him very carefully. When I looked at Holmes, I saw that he was very calm. He stared at one point and crossed his fingers. He was thinking. He had been sitting like this for fifteen minutes. The Constable was shocked. I think, he hoped to see how Holmes would stand up and run to the scene. Mr. Sanders was very upset. He couldn’t sit or stay. He was walking from wall to wall. He took a newspaper but suddenly put it on the table. He became paler.
– If the newspapers get known about this problem… We are buried.
Sherlock raised his eyes:
- So we need to be fast. Watson, we are going to the palace.
Mr. Sanders relieved:
-And what was I trying to show you last twenty minutes?
***

When we came to the Buckingham Palace, there was nervous vanity. Everyone was silent but, I noticed, that they were talking using their eyes. Certainly, all Queens’ family was informed about the situation. We passed a lot of rooms. Suddenly, we turned to a small dark corridor. There was a thick metal door with a big lock on its’ handle.
– Usually, two guardsmen stay here but now there is no need in such measures. – said Mr. Sanders with bitterness on his face.
He opened the door.
– In this corridor there are 5 such rooms with bearskins. But only this one was robbed. We can’t start procession without bearskins from this room!
– I hope you didn’t touch anything in this room. – said Holmes. – Your random acts could spoil the investigation.
– No, everything should be alright. After the crime we closed the door and didn’t let people come here. The police and other detectives tried to come here but their efforts were not successful.
We saw the big room with a lot of shelves for bearskins. The room was like in a hospital – very clean and light. There were no windows or other doors. I couldn’t see the signs of the crime. Everything was normal and usual. Holmes frowned.
– When was the crime? – he asked walking through the endless rows of shelves.
– Yesterday in the night. But we found the crime only in the morning.
- How did you find it?
– I’m responsible for the Guardsmen. Every morning and evening I open and close this room. Everything was fine when I closed this door in the evening. In the morning when I opened this door I saw the missing.
– Could you lose the key somewhere?
– No, the key is always with me, on my neck. Nobody could still it. I sleep very sensitive.
– Has this key a duplicate?
– Yes, but it is with the Queen always.
– Could she lose it?
– No, all her keys are under the strictest guard. All men were carefully checked. There is a special password. Nobody knows it except Queen and the Guardsman. The password changes every day. Only Queen has a key of the key store. Signs of tampering in the store were not found.
I looked through the shelves. Nothing remarkable. My sight fell down on the floor. I saw barely distinguishable footprint. It was too small to be adults’. I listened to the talk of Holmes’ and Mr. Sanders’. But there was no sound. I called Sherlock:
- Holmes, I found something really interesting! You must see it!
He ran to me and saw the footprint.
– Very well, Watson!
He looked to the wall behind one of the shelves. There were some of the same footprints under the shelf. Holmes touched the footprint by his finger. The color was grey. Suddenly, Holmes’ face cleared.
– How many years ago did you do here a repair? – he asked.
– Only two month ago…
- Mr. Sanders!!! Queen! – a young man ran into the room. – She wants to meet with you! She is waiting for you in her study!
– What?! – The Constable cried. – Why now? Ok’, I’m coming. Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson, can I leave you for some minutes?
– Of course, you can. – Holmes answered. – If you don’t mind we will stay here.
– Mr. Sanders! – the man called him.
– Yes, I’m on the way! Stay here, Mr. Holmes. I‘ll try to be fast.
And he ran away. Holmes closed the door and went to the wall. He took out a penknife and sat down. He tapped at the floor and suddenly I saw a small square contour on it. Sherlock raised this part and we saw a hole.
– Aha! That’s how they penetrated here! - he exclaimed.
– But Holmes, this hole is too small for adult. Do you think, it was a child?
- Not excluded. – he answered. – But I have another idea. Did you notice that dimly expressed smell when we came here?
– No.
– But I noticed. It was the smell of animals.
– So, you think, the robbers were from the zoo? – I caught a shadow of irony in my question.
– No. Watson, have you ever been to the “Amphitheater Astley”? It’s a circus of horse riding.
– Why do you think that robbers were from the circus?
– Look at this hole. Distance to the ground is too big for a small person. He had to jump. And such hop only trained man could do.
– But somebody could throw him…
- No, couldn’t. Here was only one man. I’ll prove it.
He took out a small torch and sent the light into the hole.
– Do you see another hole there?
I carefully looked through the walls and saw a small hole. Several rays bravely fought their way through it. The hole was too small for a man with normal height. Holmes sent light to the ground. There were footprints like in the room. But the amount of them was too small for several people. Holmes turned to me with a smile:
- So, Watson. Do you want to see a performance?
***

Next day we went to the circus of horses. Mr. Sanders was shocked by our idea to go to the circus. But we didn’t explain it. Firstly, Holmes decided to watch the performance. He wanted to prove his suggestions. The performance started. We saw a woman on a black horse. The woman was very beautiful. She had long red hair, brown eyes, gaunt figure. She wore a Spanish dress with a lot of frills and a small old hat with flowers and colored feathers. She did a lot of stunts on the horse. Everyone was amazed by her beauty and grace. I looked at Holmes. He was tense and pensive. The next statement was with two brothers dwarfs. Now I became tense. Sherlock whispered:
- It’s time.
We stood up and went backstage. Fortunately, there was no guard. We hid behind the boxes with requisite. We heard handclap. It meant that the performance finished. We saw the dwarfs. They went to their cloakroom. We went there too. Holmes said:
- Stay here, we want to talk with you.
But they had another solution. They ran out of the room with cries: “Help us!” They ran to the corral with horses. We ran after them. Suddenly the woman in Spanish dress came out:
- Oh, what happened?
She had a really strange accent but her voice was beautiful.
– Watson, catch her! She is a participant of the crime!
I tried to not to look at her. I kept her in my arms. But she was very strong for woman. She stepped on my foot by her heel. Tears gushed from my eyes. The woman wriggled out of my hands and tried to run but she stumbled over my leg and fell down. I helped her to get up but I hold her very hard. She couldn’t run away. Holmes returned holding one of the dwarfs. Another brother was held by a police man. – Now you must tell us everything – said Holmes.
We went to the nearest police station. Holmes found the bearskins in the boxes with the requisite. The robbers were isolated in a small room with the guard near the door.
So we had all evidences. Now we needed explanations. Holmes didn’t hurry. He was the master of this situation. With a happy face he walked from wall to wall then he slowly sat down. We prepared to listen.
– I explained you, Watson, why I suspected the dwarfs. They were small but strong as adults. A child couldn’t bring out 50 bearskins on his back. It’s too heavy. But I didn’t think about two dwarfs. There weren’t a lot of footprints. Obviously, they tried to walk by one way, not to go in different parts of room.
– But for what did they steal the bearskins? – asked the police man. – It’s the next part of my story. – smiled Sherlock. – I think, Watson, you were surprised when I told you to catch the woman. Did you notice her accent?
I nodded. Holmes continued:
- She is from Denmark.
We sighed loudly. Everyone remembered the recent war with Denmark.
– Can you bring her here? – said Holmes to the policeman.
– Yes, of course.
When they came in, I noticed that woman had red eyes and uncured tears. She looked sad bur here eyes were flashing lightning.
- What is your name? – asked Holmes.
– Ingrid Johansen. – her voice broke.
– What is your job?
– I was a stuntwoman but now I’m an agent of Denmark’s Government.
– Why did you decide to steal the bearskins?
– Because it could greatly spoil the reputation of Britain.
I was surprised by her answers. She was sincere and she answered without hesitations.
– Are dwarfs from Denmark too?
– No, I met them in the circus. I promised to take them with me back in Denmark. – she smiled sadly.
– Stop, Holmes! But how did you get known that she was a participant too? – I asked.
– I found near the Buckingham palace a bright feather. – Holmes answered softly. I looked at the old hat on the Ingrid’s head. Some feathers were lost.

We returned all bearskins to the Mr. Sanders. He hugged us very hard. The returning of the bearskins meant that he would stay on his work. We had the audience with the Queen. She thanked us and gave a solid reward. Ingrid Johansen with two brothers was put into prison. Later I remembered her several times. In the evening after the meeting with Queen we were at our house. Holmes was reading a newspaper and I was looking in the fireplace and thinking about circus. Suddenly we heard a knock. I opened the door and saw Henry Sanders. I felt a fright.
– Friends, I have got a problem! Someone has stolen my gold watches. Can you help me?
I and Sherlock laughed.
– Not now. – said I and closed the door.
No more adventures for today.
